What if your emotions didn't need fixing?

July 21, 20263 min read

Have you ever noticed yourself quickly trying to get rid of uncomfortable emotions, especially if it’s regarding your bank account?

What if, instead of pushing the discomfort away, you learned to greet these emotions differently?

One of the practices I come back to again and again is called the Inner Smile.

It isn't about pretending everything is okay or forcing yourself to be positive.

It's about meeting whatever is happening inside your body with warmth instead of resistance.

This changes far more than how we feel.

It changes how we respond.

And that affects everything, including the financial decisions we make and how we react to money and investing.

Emotions themselves are not the problem. And we should never expect or wish to get rid of all negative emotions (likely humanly impossible). There indeed may be times we actually need fear or anger for example. The Inner Smile practice sees through a lens of ideal balance, so the goal is to cultivate a balance of more positive emotion than negative emotions.

Instead of reacting to fear, frustration, disappointment, or uncertainty, you simply bring a gentle smile inward. Within your own body…

Toward the part of you that's feeling anxious.

Toward the tightness in your chest.

Toward the knot in your stomach.

Toward the excitement that feels almost too big to hold.

This isn't about making the feeling disappear.

When we meet ourselves with gentleness instead of resistance, something begins to soften.

The nervous system starts to recognise that these emotions don't have to be fought.

They can simply be experienced and moved through like a wave.

Why does this matter with money?

Because in investing there will be days when markets rise and days when they fall.

Moments when you're confident and moments when doubt creeps in.

Days when certain emotions tempt you to purchase something that you know is not going to fit on your budget sheet.

If every emotional wave pulls you into reaction, your financial decisions often become reactions too.

But when you learn to stay present with what's happening inside you, without immediately trying to fix it or escape it, you create space.

And in that space, wiser decisions become possible.

A small practice:

Close your eyes for a moment. Think of something that makes you smile. A person? An animal? A funny video or joke?

Fill your face with a golden ball of smiling energy.

Notice one emotion that's present right now.

Like a waterfall, let the smile cascade down your entire body. Smiling to all that is present.

Stay here for a few breaths.

You are changing how you meet what you feel.
